A donation to the Dementia Research Team
We would like to thank PIS PECHAL s.r.o. for their financial donation to support the research activities of the Dementia Research Team of the International Clinical Research Center of St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno (FNUSA-ICRC). Fifty thousand CZK will be used to support the treatment and research of Alzheimer’s disease under the Czech Brain Aging Study (CBAS) program.
Czech Brain Aging Study is a long-term observational study of aging and dementia, combining clinical care and clinical research with the participation of the Cognitive Center at Department of Neurology of the Motol University Hospital in Prague and our research center. The pilot project was launched in 2005 and a significant shift occurred in 2011 thanks to the support of the European Regional Development Fund and the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic.
The aim of CBAS is to search for new biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease that will allow patients to be found in the early stages of the disease before the clinical signs of the disease develop. This early diagnosis will make it possible to apply preventive and therapeutic measures at a time when they can still be effective. Recently, the team has focused on expanding the number of measurable biomarkers by including proteins related to neuronal activity and synaptic functions or enzymes regulating protein expression. Possible non-pharmacological interventions related to the promotion of healthy aging are an important part of the research.
As the only long-term study in Central Europe, CBAS is well known and recognized abroad. This is evidenced by a number of established cooperation with international institutions – for example, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, Mayo Clinic and the University of South Florida (USA) or Karolinska Institutet (Sweden).
