The effect of technology on the world of medicine is becoming more and more profound, making cooperation of doctors with technical staff inevitable in many medical sectors. The mission of Biomedical Engineering Center (BME) is to provide ICRC's research programs with instrumentation and expert technical support in biomedical engineering, especially in the acquisition and analysis of biological signals, as well as transmitting, integrating, and archiving research data. In addition to acquiring and analyzing signals from the heart and brain, BME teams' focus is the area of regulatory mechanisms of blood pressure in the body, methods for more accurate ultrasound imaging, and the development of advanced technologies for rehabilitation.

Main research areas

  • Technical and expert support of cardiology and neurology research programs in the field of new technologies and equipment, development of measurement research protocols, sensing of biological signals from the patient, analysis and evaluation of signals and data from the patient.
  • Development and testing of new noninvasive methods and technologies for early diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.
  • Processing, analysis, new techniques, and statistical evaluation of EEG signals sensed from  the brain (intracerebral/surface sensing).
  • Development of new techniques for experimental measurement of cardiac electrical activity.
  • Research in the use of advanced 3D imaging technology in rehabilitation; study and development of well-performing rehabilitation systems based on biofeedback.
  • Development of new acquisition methods and analyzes for advanced ultrasound imaging using contrast agents; advanced perfusion imaging in cardiology.
  • Organization, processing, storage and security of the data obtained in all research activities of ICRC.

Technology background

  • HiSeM laboratories: labs for  highly sensitive biological signals measurement. The concept are laboratories located on the second underground floor (below underground water), equipped with Faraday cages and special acquisitions systems designed for rooms with highly clean environment (in terms of electromagnetic interference).
  • Flexible labs: full-range laboratories equipped for cardio and neuro diagnostic methods and measurement of biological signals
  • ANNAlab MI3 technology: designed for advanced research in cardiology and neurology, this special "custom-made" electrophysiology acquisition and monitoring system is oriented for synchronized recording of various biological signals, including digital event channels, audio-video channels, and accurate time synchronization.
